About the Project
The design process for the MYArts mural began in 2018 and evolved through multiple stages, shaped by community feedback, input from the MYArts committee and board, and the unique challenges of producing a community mural during a global pandemic.
The final design features abstracted imagery that celebrates the creative spirit of sound and auditory arts, visual arts, and performing arts. Patterns and youth contributions reflect these themes, grounding the mural in the diverse forms of artistic expression that MYArts supports.
Drawings and patterns by MMSD youth and participants in the Cultural Connections and Little Picassos programs are at the heart of the mural. Many of these designs were screen printed onto mural panels with the guidance of artist Yvette Pino, while other details were hand-painted in the DAMA studio.
The MYArts mural stands as a vibrant expression of community collaboration — a work created by many hands and minds. As the designer, my role was to bring together the creativity and ideas of young artists across our community into a unified and inspiring vision.
Special thanks to Alicia Rheal and all of the artists at DAMA whose dedication, flexibility, and artistry helped make this project possible.
